From December 2018 to June 2019, Thompson & Russell have been working with Theater Resources Unlimited’s three-part program, “How to Write A Musical that Works.” The musical being presented was CUPID’S BOW. This past Sunday, June 2, Part 3 of the workshop was offered up: “Reckoning and Resolution” — namely, wrapping up the end of your musical. Two scenes/songs from CUPID’S BOW were performed: “It Just Can’t Be” and “The Better Part of Me.” The very talented Junior Gomez played Cupid, joined by up-and-comer Amelia Schweer (Emily’s daughter!) who portrayed Enid.
Ken Cerniglia of Disney Theatrical said he loved the premise of the show! Beyond that, some great constructive feedback was offered by all the panelists. In addition to Ken there was Cheryl Davis, a Kleban and Larsen Award winning librettist and lyricist; Nancy Golladay, a literary consultant (NY Shakespeare Festival, O’Neill Conference, more) and moderator of the BMI Librettists’ Workshop; Skip Kennon, a composer/lyricist and the former artistic coordinator of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. The facilitators were Bob Ost, executive director of Theater Resources Unlimited, and TRU Literary Manager Cate Cammarata. Click here to see TRU’s website for more information about this organization.
